About Chateau Lagrezette 2013 Le Pigeonnier, Cahors

“Le Pigeonnier” is a prized seven-acre vineyard directly adjacent to the grounds of the 500-year-old Lagrézette castle, in the historic Cahors region of France. Located on the third terrace (the clay/limestone ratio on the third terrace coupled with superior drainage and levels of humidity produce wines of great power and depth) overlooking the Lot River, the vineyard slopes gently to the east for maximum exposure to sunlight. Enclosed by ancient stone walls, the vineyard contains an historic monument – a six –leg 17th century dove-cote, which gives the wine its name.

No herbicides are employed the vines average 40 years of age. Cover crops between the rows reduces growth and fights against erosion. Hand leaf removal allows for more sunlight and aeration. Green harvesting by hand reduces yields.

After hand harvesting the 100% Malbec berries from the Pigeonnier vineyard are removed from the bunches by hand and sorted. Le Pigeonnier is macerated in new Taransaud oak tanks at temperatures as high as 82 degrees Fahrenheit – in order to extract maximum flavor and intensity from the grapes. The wine matured for 22 to 24 months in new Troncais oak barrels and bottled without filtration. Less than 500 cases were produced.

Wine Enthusiast Magazine awarded this a "Cellar Selection" and scored it 94 points saying "This wine is always immense and the latest release, from a six-acre parcel surrounding Lagrézette's 17th century dovecote, is no exception. There is a sense of pent-up power here although it is not without its stylish elegance. Because it still so young, the black fruits stand out along with the concentrated tannins. It explodes in the mouth; dark and brooding. Drink this wine from 2022."

Tasting Panel Magazine scored this 95 points saying "This seven acre vineyard of Malbec is adjacent to the 500 year old Lagrezette Castle, and owned by art collector and entrepreneur Alain Dominique Perrin since 1980. Perrin coined the phrase "Modern Luxury" with the range of "Must de Cartier"jewelry and perfume (the phrase implies someone must have it). I can see the segue into his Cahors wines-most prominently this 100% single vineyard treasure. Perrin and his team-which includes consulting enologist Michel Rolland- constructs an evolved wine that's inky, with notes of iron, blood and soil. Violets are dry and format the edgy tannins, pronounced by dark chocolate and creme de cassis."
