About Chiroubles 2015 L'Aurore Des Cotes, Fabien Collonge

Best vintage since 1947!? James Suckling just wrote that winemakers in Beaujolais are making the claim that this vintage is the best since 1947, which was "a hot and dry year producing powerfully rich and long-lived wines." This wine comes from a very small, hands-on producer, Fabien Collonge. He made just 335 cases of this 2015 Cru Beaujolais from the the highest altitude vineyards in the region. His deep-rooted, mature vines average 45 years of age and the low-yield grapes are brooding with flavor and intensity. Fermentation is in traditional concrete vats with temperature control to preserve the freshness of the Gamay and the wine is also aged in concrete vats rather than oak barrels for 6 months, again to retain the character of the fruit which in this historic 2015 vintage is striking. Wine Enthusiast named it an Editors' Choice with 92 points saying "Produced from 45-year-old vines, this is a fruity ripe wine. It has concentration and some firm tannins as well a generous black-fruit character. The wine's acidity and structure will allow it to age another year, so drink from late 2017." The Wine Advocate scored it 90 points saying "The 2015 Chiroubles L'Aurore des Ctes, which is aged for 6 months in concrete vats, has a focused, delineated and fresh bouquet of blackcurrant and cassis fruit. The palate is well balanced with smooth tannin, quite velvety in texture, layers of ripe black cherries and cassis mixed with spice that lend it freshness and edginess. This is a lovely Chiroubles that should drink well for 5-6 years." Incredible value for such a rare and expressive wine.
