About Domaine Lafage 2019 Cuvée Nicolas, Grenache Noir Vieilles Vignes, Cotes Catalanes IGP

Domaine Lafage run by Jean-Marc and Eliane, the 7th generation from a family of winegrowers, is located in the heart of the Roussillon. Marked by multiple terroirs, extended in a patchwork from the Mediterranean Sea to the foothills of the Pyrenees, over the generations, the family had amassed scattered vineyards throughout the region, which now totals over 380 acres of vines, most of them in excess of 50 years in age.

Benefiting from a warm, dry climate, the estate is farmed organically. Harvesting is manual and lasts over several months due to the variations in conditions in each sub-zone they farm. The winemaking is surprisingly uncomplicated with mostly concrete tanks for the reds with a small number of French oak demi-muids.

This wine is 100% Grenache from 65-year-old vines from a vineyard at the foothill of the Pyrenees, and from parcels of the high valley of L’Agly. Grapes were hand-picked and each parcel vinified separately in open vats, with temperature control. The wine aged in Burgundy barrels from 12 to 15 months.

Jeb Dunnuck scored this 95 points saying "All Grenache brought up in demi–muids and aged on lees for 8 months, the medium ruby/purple hued color of the 2019 Cuvée Nicolas is followed by a killer bouquet of kirsch liqueur, savory spices, cured meats, and peppery garrigue. Rich, medium to full-bodied, and gorgeously textured, it has wonderful richness with no sensation of weight or heaviness. It’s another insane value from this team."
