About Santi 2012 Amarone Classico DOCG

Santi traces its origins to 1843.  Carlo Santi established the original winery in the heart of the most acclaimed wine growing zone in the Veneto near Lake Garda. The Santi Amarone is sourced from estate vineyards spread across multiple terroirs of the Valpolicella region. A blend of 65% Corvina, 30% Rondinella and 5% Molinara, the ripest grapes on the grape clusters are harvested in late October. Immediately following harvest the clusters are dried under shelter in flat wooden crates until late January of the following year. The drying process is the essence of Amarone. It greatly increases the natural sugar content and concentrates the grapes which then produce a powerful wine with myriad flavors. The wine is then aged up to three years in Allier and Slovenian oak casks prior to bottling. Vinous scored this 90 points saying "Bright dark red. Red cherry, sweet spices, botanical herbs and a strong note of cedar oak. Then rich, dense and juicy, with very good sweetness to the red fruit and herbal flavors. Turns a touch dry and austere on the back end. Very well done for Santi."
